Is Vastu an essential component of Interior Designing?

Vastu, the science of architecture is often misunderstood and even feared. For many, it means designing homes / commercial spaces based on its core principles while others fear that challenging these rules can bring bad luck. These are just myths. Vastu interior design is neither an art of decorating spaces nor does it penalize when not followed. It is a practical rulebook of laying out various architectural elements such as doors, windows, kitchen / pantry, bedroom and bathroom. Additionally, it also offers solutions in case the said elements are not positioned as per Vastu recommended directions.

Interior Designers Mumbai – What is their take?

Vastu or Vastu Shastra is an ancient building practice which is referred even in the Vedas and typically based on five core components – space, air, fire, water & earth. The idea is to use these five elements while building a house or a commercial space via optimized ( Vastu ) sectional layout. But the question still remains unanswered – Is Vastu an essential component of Interior Designing?

While some say Vastu interior design is a pseudoscience, a fallacy, and difficult to adhere to because of contemporary construction norms some are religiously fanatic about the whole idea. However, both schools of thought agree that it needs a deep understanding, years of experience and an intellectual mind. The Gurus of Vastu often use terms such as “Negative Energies”, “Prosperity” and “Harmony”. The reason is because Vastu allows interior designers to balance these five basic elements. Once achieved, it improves health, wealth and relationship quotients.

You don’t need to Google search “Interior Designers Mumbai” to know that Vastu is not an essential component of Interior Designing.

Mentioned below are some of the reasons for this conclusion.

1. Interior designers mostly get to work with pre-constructed spaces. It simply means these habitats are already partitioned / semi-partitioned and therefore repositioning doors and windows to please Vastu may not be possible. For example, Vastu recommends southeast direction for kitchen, fireplace and electrical switch boards. Now imagine if the recommended direction is already occupied by a fire exit or an elevator shaft.

2. Elevation and surroundings of a habitat is again a parameter which cannot be tweaked by an interior designer or Vastu Interior Design. However, they play an important role. Vastu suggests unobstructed entry of sun, wind and water. If these elements are blocked or unable to seep into the habitat it can result in bad energies.

3. Vastu typically advises earthly colors, textures and fixtures. These are exploited to calm or neutralize a particular area / section of a dwelling whether residential or commercially which are affected by negative energies. However, the owner may not be in favor of such a compromise leading to conflict of ideas. Moreover, fusing Vastu with trending design concepts may not be possible. Ask top “interior designers Mumbai” and the chances are they will agree with the above.

Should Vastu be completely ignored?

Not at all! Color schemes, furniture / fixture layout, building materials are some of the areas where an interior designer can follow Vastu principles. Use of appropriate / complementing artifacts such as paintings and mirrors, clutter free and breathable spaces, and harnessing natural elements through creative exploitation of exteriors are some of the ways to keep Vastu in good mood.

Vastu interior design is not an essential component but incorporating its principles even partially can result in homes / commercial spaces that resonate with prosperity and happiness. Some of the best interior designers across India believe in this concept.
